One Year Later: What I’ve Learned Since Saying Yes to Myself

One year ago, I quietly started my first day as a full-time business owner.
There was no grand announcement. No photo with balloons. I was too busy doing what I do: helping my former employer fill my role, juggling contract work, walking the dog, applying to speak at a conference, and making dinner.

That first day felt exciting, but also overwhelming. I had advice from fellow business owners ringing in my ears:

Set boundaries. Create structure. Make time for yourself.

I didn’t do any of that on day one. But here’s the truth: that’s okay. Because building something new — something of your own — is messy and beautiful at the same time.

One Year In: What’s Changed

✔️ I’ve grown more disciplined, with time, priorities, and my energy.
✔️ I’ve learned how to say, “not now” or “not yet,” which is a form of growth I didn’t expect.
✔️ I’ve worked with incredible clients who challenge and inspire me.
✔️ I’ve said yes to opportunities I wouldn’t have imagined a year ago.

The Power of People

Over the past year, I’ve met with more than 80 people for coffee, Zoom chats, walk-and-talks, or quick check-ins. Each conversation offered something:

  • A referral
  • A kind word
  • A dose of reality
  • A boost of encouragement
  • Or simply, a reminder that I’m not doing this alone

I’ve learned that community is everything. My people have shown up for me in small and mighty ways, and I hope I’ve done the same for them.

What I Still Want to Do

As Compass Communications heads into its second year, I want to:

  • Keep growing, but at a pace that honors my values
  • Help more mission-driven organizations tell their stories clearly and confidently
  • Speak more, teach more, and share what I’ve learned
  • Prioritize time for me, not just as a business owner, but as a partner, mom, friend, and human

This journey is far from perfect. Some days still fly by in a blur. But every step has been worth it. I feel grateful, proud, and more “me” than ever.

If you’ve been part of this journey, thank you. Your support means more than you know.

Here’s to the next chapter.
